Together we create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down syndrome.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>THIS YEAR\u2019S TOPIC<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with disabilities do not always get proper healthcare. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to change it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On WDSD 2024, the DSi (Down Syndrome international) network is launching a a new topic as we call for <\/span><\/i><b><i>Health Equity for People with Disabilities<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Inclusive health is a human right.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>DEAR <\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>DOCTOR<\/b> <b>CAMPAIGN<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our campaign supporting this topic objective is to raise awareness among doctors to promote better understanding of Down syndrome. The campaign is dedicated to advocating for enhanced healthcare practices tailored to individuals with Down syndrome. Through our <\/span><b>&#8220;Dear Doctor&#8221; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">initiative on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Media<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, participants within our network are urged to share their narratives, encounters, and messages directly aimed at healthcare professionals. By utilizing the hashtags <\/span><b>#DearDoctor <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">et <\/span><b>#MedEd<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, individuals can contribute pictures or videos addressing prevalent misconceptions, advocating for personalized care, and potentially broadening perspectives on who and what a person with Down syndrome can embody. This campaign strives to elevate awareness, foster inclusivity, and champion respectful and high-quality healthcare for all. We are preparing materials for your social media use and encourage you to send us videos\/photos for our EU social media channels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; videos and photos starting with \u201cDear Doctor\u201d, two main #: #DearDoctor #MedEd<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who<\/b><b>? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anyone who wants to participate in this years World Down syndrome day<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>O\u00f9? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Social Media Platforms: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; the campaign lasts from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1st March <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">till <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Down Syndrome Day 21st of March<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>THE STEPS<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select an idea or create your own (consider current events and context).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a video or photo, always start the post with <\/span><b>\u201cDear Doctor\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (either in the caption or while talking). This can be in english or your own language.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorporate our key hashtags: #DearDoctor and #MedEd. (Examples can be found below) and tag @EUforTrisomy21<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclude by inviting others to join in and pledge their support. Additionally, share the campaign with your community!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>WHAT IS INCLUSIVE HEALTH?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article 25 of the UN CRPD says that: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cpersons with disabilities have the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health without discrimination on the basis of disability\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that people with disabilities <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have the right to health equity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every person should have access to the highest attainable standard of healthcare provision where they live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people with Down syndrome, this can be realised if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any health diagnosis is based on what is presented, without any discrimination or unnecessary bias;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the right health surveillance or treatments take place when they are required and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people are supported to understand their healthcare needs and make their own choices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">people with disabilities should be provided with easy to understand explanations that empower them to take informed choices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what we would expect for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>CAUSES OF BAD HEALTH OUTCOMES<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with Down syndrome are genetically more likely than others to have some health issues. For example, heart problems, thyroid issues, sleep apnoea and dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, most of the health issues that people with Down syndrome face can be treated or managed with a good medical follow up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many external causes of the poor health outcomes that people with Down syndrome have. These causes are the same for other people with disabilities, although people with intellectual disabilities are among the worst affected.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Health Organization report highlights some of these causes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Structural factors \u2013 for example, stigma and discrimination, or inadequate policies and processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social factors \u2013 for example, living in poverty or transport not being accessible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors &#8211; for example, not being physically active or having a poor diet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issues with health systems \u2013 for example, badly trained health professionals or poor-quality health services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>WHO 40 STEPS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Health Organization report outlines 40 actions that can be taken to improve health outcomes for people with disabilities:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-33650\" src=\"https:\/\/eufortrisomy21.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screenshot-2024-03-05-at-10.58.22-1024x730.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eufortrisomy21.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screenshot-2024-03-05-at-10.58.22-1024x730.png 1024w, https:\/\/eufortrisomy21.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screenshot-2024-03-05-at-10.58.22-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/eufortrisomy21.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screenshot-2024-03-05-at-10.58.22-768x547.png 768w, https:\/\/eufortrisomy21.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screenshot-2024-03-05-at-10.58.22-1536x1095.png 1536w, https:\/\/eufortrisomy21.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screenshot-2024-03-05-at-10.58.22-2048x1460.png 2048w, https:\/\/eufortrisomy21.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Screenshot-2024-03-05-at-10.58.22-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve highlighted some of them:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EU for Trisomy 21 idea: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a video where a person with Down syndrome dresses up in <\/span><b>doctor attire<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, symbolizing their involvement and engagement in healthcare processes. Show them interacting confidently with healthcare professionals, perhaps discussing the importance of disability inclusion in healthcare. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caption: &#8220;Dear Doctor, inclusion starts with representation.
