EU for Trisomy 21 Publishes European Study on Self-Advocacy and Social Inclusion for Persons with Down Syndrome

05 marzo 2025

EU for Trisomy 21 is pleased to announce the publication of the study Empowering Self-Advocacy and Social Inclusion for Persons with Down Syndrome: Best Practices and Insights, developed within the framework of the European Self-Advocates Project (2023–2025), co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

The study documents the theoretical foundations, methodology, and practical design choices behind a European self-advocacy training programme created with y for people with Down syndrome. Drawing on academic research, international collaboration, and direct input from self-advocates, the paper explains how inclusive education, human dignity, and self-determination can be translated into concrete training practices across different cultural contexts in Europe.

The publication reflects the collaborative work of partner organisations from nine European countries and highlights key elements of the programme, including the co-teaching model pairing a self-advocate with an assistant teacher, the use of accessible and easy-to-read materials, and the adaptation of lessons to local realities while maintaining a shared European framework.

By making this study publicly available, EU for Trisomy 21 aims to contribute to ongoing discussions on inclusive education, disability rights, and meaningful participation of people with intellectual disabilities in the development of policies and programmes that affect their lives.
